Orchard Road

Need some retail therapy or arranging a birthday dinner for your friends? You will likely head to Orchard Road. After all, that is where all the action is at especially during public holidays. Orchard Road is a 2.2km-long major road in the Central Area of Singapore. Often known among colloquially as Orchard or town, Orchard Road is a highly-visited shopping belt and popular tourist attraction.

From luxury retail malls to 5-star hotels and restaurants serving cuisines from all around the world, Orchard Road promises a wealth of sights, sounds and experiences like no other.

Right outside Orchard MRT Station sits the contemporary and eye-catching ION Orchard, one of Singapore’s most dazzling shopping complexes. Its brightly-lit and futuristic-looking exterior decor makes its presence known. With more than 8 levels of stores, ION Orchard carries a variety of merchandise, mainly international luxury fashion and cosmetics brands. Its high ceiling, along with marbled walls and floors, provide a glamorous shopping experience fit for royalty. Right opposite ION Orchard is the famous TANGS, one of Singapore’s oldest department stores. The establishment offers well-known brands, Asian collectibles and quaint souvenirs.

Dining

Whether at ION Orchard or the neighbouring 313 Somerset and Orchard Gateway, or Paragon Shopping Mall, there are no lack of dining options along the Orchard Road belt.

To experience a truly cosmopolitan meal, drop by Wild Honey in Mandarin Gallery. Touted to have the best breakfast in Singapore, this quiet cafe brings the dishes of various nations under one roof. Choose from a delectable array of sandwiches, meats and salads from countries such as Italy, Turkey and Mexico. For taste buds that favour Asian cuisine, Orchard Road is bound to satisfy too. There are more than 20 restaurants offering quality Japanese and Korean cuisines. Chinese hotpot and the famous spicy Sichuan cuisine options are aplenty as well. For a local taste, there is also The Peranakan which serves authentic Nyonya and Peranakan cuisine as its name suggests.

Connoisseurs of fine spirits can drop by The Grande Whisky Collection on the fifth floor of ION Orchard. This museum showcases over 4,500 of the world’s rarest and oldest whiskies and a gift shop with a selection of Scottish and Japanese labels. The regular wine tastings and guided tours make this a fine place to savour and learn about the different flavours and aroma of this much-beloved spirit.

Things to do

Orchard Road is more than just a shopping and dining paradise. As you stroll along Orchard Road, it is not uncommon to witness spectacular street performances by buskers performing intricate magic tricks, complicated mime or juggling acts and acoustic live music. You can also head to the 55th floor of ION Orchard’s Sky Observatory where you can get a glimpse of the stunning and majestic Singapore city skyline.

Orchard Road is also conveniently located to many places of interest and historical sites in Singapore, such as Fort Canning Park, the National Museum of Singapore, Singapore Art Museum and the Istana. It is worth several weekends to explore and you will definitely find yourself going back again and again for the myriad of experiences you can enjoy!
